We know many of you will have fitness goals this year, so we paid Harborne Pool and Fitness Centre a visit to bring you 5 simple exercises for 2023, as part of #HealthyHarborne!

The lovely Erin, a personal trainer and gym instructor at Harborne Pool and Fitness Centre, has put together these exercises of 3 varying difficulties, perfect for everyone from the fitness newbie to regular gym-goer.

Watch the videos below for a demonstration from Erin of how to do these, along with instructions for each workout.

Will you be trying these at home or during your next visit to the gym? Let us know!

Exercise 1: Star Jumps
A full body exercise that improves cardiovascular fitness. Works the core, arms and legs.

To take it to another level you can add small dumbbells.

Exercise 2: Squats

An exercise that works the lower leg, hamstring and calves. It strengthens everything from the hips down.

To take it to another level, you can add a kettlebell, dumbbells, weight plates or med ball. Essentially any weight. For someone without equipment, you could use tins from the kitchen.

Exercise 3: Press Ups

A strength exercise for the core and the arms.

Can be taken up a step with weight on the back, but be careful. Anyone with back problems should avoid adding extra weight.

Exercise 4: Crunches
Another strength exercise for the core again. A good balanced workout session combines Strength and Cardio, they are the best combination to see real results. Works the rectus abdominis AKA central abs. Can be taken to another level with wrist weights/small dumbbells – 1 or 2 kg.

Level 3

Exercise 5: Burpees

A full body exercise, and the hardest on this list. A cardio exercise that is working everything from the neck down.

It can be stepped up by adding wrist weights but that is for a real fitness fanatic. Just completing the burpees at the level someone is comfortable at is enough of a workout.
